Suspect Iago Magno Thomas, 30, from the Santa Cruz neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, handed himself in to police a day after the 3rd September killing.

Victim Giovana Anselmo Sodre, 27, who had two children with Thomas, had walked out of the family home months earlier.

But when Thomas discovered she was three months pregnant by another man, reported local media, he tracked her down and killed her.

Giovana’s cousin, Daiane Goncalves, 28, told Brazilian media: “Until a couple of years ago, she lived in Sao Joao de Meriti, but she moved to Santa Cruz and completely distanced herself from her family.

“She started to not respond to our messages anymore.

“Other friends also say that she did not respond to them on other social networks. She disappeared.”

On the day of the killing, Thomas reportedly took their children aged four and eight from their mum’s home before returning to stab her.

Crews from the Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC) later isolated the crime scene and took over the investigation.

Meanwhile, the couple’s children are currently with Thomas’s family.

Cousin Daiane said: “Giovana’s father went to try to get the children, but they didn’t let him.

“The girl and the boy are at his sister’s house. We are trying to get them back.”

The victim’s funeral took place at 1.45pm at the Ricardo de Albuquerque Municipal Cemetery on Wednesday, 6th September.
