Suspect Ellen Caroline de Oliveira Paixao fled leaving husband Luiz Paula Miranda to bleed to death on the kitchen floor after the attack in the early hours of Thursday, on 17th August, say police.

Chillingly a packet of lye – a highly caustic compound which can dissolve human flesh – was found next to a bottle of yoghurt.

Police – who have CCTV footage of Paixao buying the deadly toxin and a new SIM card just days before the killing – believe she first tried to poison her husband.

They also discovered she had two passports with different identities.

Paixao, 33, is said to have fled in a speedboat from the harbour in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Arari, Para State, Brazil heading to Belem.

Neighbours told police that the couple rowed frequently and her bank clerk husband was often terrified of her outbursts.

His body was found when his boss went to the couple’s home after he failed to turn up for work.

Local Police Chief Ronaldo Coelho said: “A brutal crime. She stabbed her partner 37 times and just ran away.

“The investigations into the crime are being carried out by the Civil Police of the State of Para.

“Since last weekend, we have already been informed that the suspect could be in the State of Amapa, since she is from Amapa and has relatives in Macapa, as well as the victim.

“We have teams in the field, as well as intelligence teams, to locate Ellen Caroline, for whom there is an open preventive arrest warrant.

“We are facing a brutal crime, in which the victim was possibly poisoned to reduce his power of resistance and then received 37 knife stabs.

“We ask that society help us with information that leads us to the whereabouts and arrest of the suspect.”
